Horror / Survival horror
I’d read this in the winter a few years ago. Recommending it recently, I found the Kindle edition is on special so if you are looking for a seasonal horror – or you live somewhere that never sees snow – this is for you.
Normally the ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’ storyline does not appeal to me, nor does a daddy/son plot work but this hits so perfectly. It straddles drama and horror so well as Malfi’s writing often does. There is gripping tension, ample weapons, and the threat of a white-out blizzard… and then it goes sideways in the best possible way.
This one sticks with me too. I still think of a car load of perfect strangers cramped in against a blizzard, headlights barely making them to this midwestern town, greeted by wary survivors and the threat of the snow itself. Perfectly crafted winter horror to keep you chilled.
